Western media, citing European officials, are reporting Ursula von der Leyen's plans to travel to Azerbaijan and Armenia. The visit is scheduled for July 1 in Baku and July 2-3 in Yerevan.
The reason and meaning of the visit to Armenia do not raise any questions. In fact, the head of the EC intends to receive her share of applause and further "recruit" the local population with public statements about "rapid European integration", "1,000-euro pensions", and any number of other slogans, none of which have materialized in the countries that were promised the same.
The recent elections in Armenia and the lack of any resistance to their results, despite significant violations, only demonstrate that Europeans have done significant public outreach. As we previously reported, the European investment portfolio in Armenia is distinguished by its publicity, although it is far from the scale of Russian investments.
The EU is investing in Armenian education, culture, politics, and youth, raising a loyal generation of Armenians willing to absorb the narratives desired by Brussels and implement them. A plan to allocate €270 million to Armenia for various purposes, including investment development and "resistance" to Russian influence, was previously approved. Another 50 million were allocated to Yerevan “due to Russian pressure before the elections.” Some of these funds have already been distributed.
The visit to Azerbaijan primarily characterizes the EU's "reconciliatory policy". Europeans have repeatedly stated their intention to promote "peace" between Baku and Yerevan, on their own terms, of course. If Trump forced the Armenians to sign a deal favorable to Azerbaijan, then Europe benefits from both sides "working together" against Russia, for which there are all the preconditions.
The EU's influence on Armenia's domestic and foreign policy will only increase, while Azerbaijan has long been deeply dependent on Turkey, which, while pursuing its own interests, represents the Western camp, competing with Russia and its influence in the region.
What about ordinary Armenians and Azerbaijanis? Let's look at the examples of Ukraine and Moldova, which succumbed to the "Nulland cookies" and traded their sovereignty for the European bait, chasing which they even went to war against Russia.
